Delicious sugar cookies don’t get any easier than this! Amish Sugar Cookies are simple, homemade, drop cookies that are soft, melt-in-your-mouth, and slightly crumbly on the edges.
There is something so special to me about a really delicious old-fashioned recipe. This recipe for Amish sugar cookies has been around for ages, and it needs no adjustments.
Amish Sugar Cookies are completely perfect without being complicated.
If you’re wondering how Amish cookies differ from other sugar cookie recipes, it’s all in the texture.
My sprinkle sugar cookies and soft sugar cookies are chewy cookies. My cut-out sugar cookie recipe makes cookies that are crisp and sturdy, ready to decorate.
But these are very different! The texture of Amish sugar cookies is soft and crumbly and totally irresistible.
As a bonus, these buttery cookies are super easy to make. This is a no-chill cookie recipe, and a drop cookie recipe, so the cookies will be ready quickly without a lot of effort.

Amish Sugar Cookie Recipe Highlights
- Simple Ingredients and Method – The Amish are known for their delicious, classic, no-fuss baked goods, and this recipe is one of them! All of these ingredients are probably already in your kitchen, and they are super easy to make. In fact, the Amish wouldn’t even use a mixer for these! You can, but you don’t need to. Feel free to mix up the dough by hand.
- Unique Texture – These sugar cookies are different from all of my others! I typically bake a soft, chewy style of sugar cookie, but these are dryer, with a slightly crumbly texture that makes them melt-in-your-mouth amazing.
- No Chilling Required! I love this kind of cookie dough because it means that I don’t have to wait to start baking! From start to finish, this recipe will take you around 30 minutes if you bake two trays of cookies at once.
Key Ingredients
Here is everything you need to make these old-fashioned sugar cookies. Take a look; I bet you already have it all! I’m including some tips and details on the most important ones.
Complete list of ingredients with quantities and instructions is located in the recipe card below
- Baking Soda, Baking Powder, and Cream of Tartar: Yes, you need all three of these to create the lovely texture of these cookies. Be sure that all of your leaveners are fresh so that the cookies puff up properly in the oven.
- Butter: Use unsalted butter, softened to room temperature. The butter should be very easy to cream, but not melted.
- Canola Oil: I think this is the one thing that stands out in the recipe that is different from many other traditional sugar cookie recipes. Using both butter and oil gives the cookies a different type of richness and a unique soft texture. Instead of canola oil, you can also use vegetable oil.
How To Make Amish Sugar Cookies
Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (180°C), or 160°C for a fan oven. Line your baking sheets with parchment paper and set them aside while you mix up the easy dough recipe.
Top Tips
- Ingredients at room temperature, including the eggs and butter, will mix together smoothly and give you the best results.
- Mix well, but don’t overmix. You should add the flour to the bowl in a few smaller additions, mixing after each one until you can’t see any more dry streaks.
- Cool on the pan for about 5 minutes before moving the cookies to a cooling rack. If you try to move them too soon, they will break.
- Adjust if needed. This recipe makes 5 dozen 3-inch cookies. You can easily halve or double the recipe if you need to.
Storage Tips
Keep baked Amish Sugar Cookies in an airtight container on the counter. They’ll stay fresh for up to 5 days this way.
Freeze these in ziplock bags for up to 3 months. Thaw for a few hours before enjoying.

Recipe FAQs
Can This Recipe Be Used to Make Cutouts?
I don’t recommend it. Amish sugar cookies bake up fairly delicately and are difficult to cut into shapes that stay together. Instead, make my Ultimate Sugar Cookies, or try Chocolate Sugar Cookies for something different.
What Type of Icing is Best for Amish Sugar Cookies?
Frosting is not traditional for these cookies, but if you’d like to add icing or frosting, please do! Any type of cookie frosting that you enjoy will be wonderful. Try my Cream Cheese Frosting for Cookies or Buttercream Frosting for Cookies. Both are delicious on sugar cookies.
What Makes This Cookie Recipe Amish?
If you are in an area where Amish, Pennsylvania Dutch, or Mennonite communities live, you may have had some of their delicious baked goods.
Because of the values that the Amish have, their cookies are plain without any decoration, made with simple, basic ingredients, and able to be made without electricity.
Although I am using a stand mixer to make the dough, you can make Amish sugar cookies completely by hand! It’s a great arm and shoulder workout.
