What You Need to Make Flower Cookies
Complete list of ingredients with quantities and instructions is located in the recipe card below
- Sugar Cookie Recipe: My no-chill Sugar Cookie Recipe is perfect for these cookies. It doesn’t require chilling, and it produces soft, tender, and perfect cookies every time. If you want chocolate flavored cookies, try my Chocolate Sugar Cookie Recipe.
- Best Buttercream Frosting: This buttercream frosting for cookies tastes amazing and hardens nicely, making it ideal for decorating. If you want other options, you can use Chocolate Buttercream, Chocolate Ganache, and even Cream Cheese Frosting for these flowers.
- Flower Cookie Cutter: I used a 2.3-inch (6 cm) flower cookie cutter, which made 50 cookies from this recipe.
- Gel Food Coloring: Gel colors are recommended because they don’t alter the consistency of the buttercream and provide brighter, more vibrant colors. Avoid using liquid food coloring.
- Piping Bags and Tips: To create the petal designs, you’ll need four piping bags and a #104 tip (preferably four of them).
- Small Offset Spatula or Cake Spatula: This will be used to spread the buttercream and create petals.
How To Make and Decorate Flower Sugar Cookies
Top Tips
- Room Temperature Ingredients: Make sure your butter and eggs are at room temperature before you start. This helps them blend more smoothly and evenly, leading to a better texture in your cookies and buttercream.
- Don’t Overmix the Dough: When mixing the cookie dough, blend just until the ingredients are combined. Overmixing can result in tough cookies instead of soft and tender ones.
- Use Parchment Paper or Silicone Mats: To prevent your cookies from sticking and to ensure even baking, line your baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
- Cool Completely Before Decorating: Allow your cookies to cool completely on a wire rack before you start decorating. Warm cookies can cause the buttercream to melt and slide off.
- Gel Food Coloring: Use gel food coloring instead of liquid to achieve vibrant colors without altering the consistency of the buttercream. Add the coloring gradually until you reach your desired shade.
- Avoid Bubbles: If you want super smooth buttercream frosting, when you whip it using a stand mixer, use the paddle attachment rather than the whisk attachment. This way, less air will be incorporated into the buttercream and you won’t get many bubbles.
- Proper Piping Bag Technique: Fill your piping bags only halfway to maintain better control. Squeeze from the top of the bag to avoid air bubbles disrupting your design.
- Consistent Pressure While Piping: Maintain steady, consistent pressure on the piping bag for even, beautiful petals. Practice on a piece of parchment paper before decorating your cookies.
- Keep Buttercream Covered: When not in use, keep your buttercream covered with plastic wrap or a damp cloth to prevent it from drying out.
Storing
- Room Temperature: Store your decorated flower cookies in an airtight container at room temperature. Place them in a single layer to avoid smudging the buttercream. They will stay fresh for up to one week.
- Refrigeration: If you need to store them for a bit longer, you can refrigerate the cookies. Place them in an airtight container with parchment paper between layers to prevent sticking. They can be refrigerated for up to two weeks.
Freezing
- Undecorated Cookies: You can freeze the undecorated cookies for up to three months. Place them in a single layer on a baking sheet to flash freeze them. After they are frozen, transfer them to an airtight container or a freezer-safe zip-top bag.
- Decorated Cookies: To freeze decorated cookies, let the buttercream harden. Then, carefully place the cookies in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze them for a few hours. Once they are frozen solid, carefully transfer them to an airtight container, placing parchment paper between each layer of cookies to prevent sticking. Decorated cookies can be frozen for up to 3 months.
- Thawing: When you’re ready to enjoy your frozen cookies, remove them from the freezer and let them thaw at room temperature in their container. This will help prevent condensation from forming on the cookies and ruining the buttercream decoration.
