Easy Cool Whip Cookies with Cake Mix
- No Fancy Equipment: The creamy dough/batter for these cookies is mixed together by hand, so you don’t need a mixer or even a whisk. In fact, all you’ll need is a sturdy spatula or a wooden spoon and a mixing bowl. A cookie scoop is also very handy for portioning out the dough before baking.
- Endless Variations: This recipe will show you how to make cool whip cookies with a box of funfetti cake mix, but you can just as easily replace the cake mix to make other flavors. Try it with chocolate cake mix, lemon cake mix, or strawberry cake mix next.
- Quick and Easy Cookie Recipe: It takes about 5 minutes to mix the cookie dough and 10 minutes to bake them. You will have this fun dessert ready in no time!
Cool Whip Cookies Ingredients
Complete list of ingredients with quantities and instructions is located in the recipe card below
- Cool Whip: Use 1 8-ounce container of Cool Whip or any other similar brand of whipped topping. I think that the flavor is best with regular cool whip, but the recipe will work with low fat or fat free as well!
- Cake Mix: 1 box of cake mix – For this recipe, look for Pillsbury Funfetti or Duncan Hines Joy-Fetti cake mix. If you’re not worried about sprinkles, feel free to use vanilla or yellow cake mix instead. You don’t need any of the ingredients listed on the back of the box – just the powdered cake mix.
- Egg: One large egg will help to bind all of the ingredients together. It’s helpful if you let your egg come to room temperature before mixing up the dough so that it incorporates smoothly.
- Powdered Sugar: Rolling each cookie in powdered sugar before baking makes the unbaked cookies easier to handle and results in a pretty fluffy coating.
How To Make Cool Whip Cookies
- Get Ready to Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C), and line 2 cookie sheets with parchment paper.
- Make the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, use a spatula to gently fold the cake mix, Cool Whip, and egg together. Mix until smooth and well combined. The cookie dough will be sticky, with a consistency somewhere between a cake mix and a cookie dough.
- Roll in Powdered Sugar: Use a cookie scoop to drop balls of the dough into a small bowl of powdered sugar. Carefully roll to coat. Place the sugar-coated cookie dough balls on the prepared baking sheet leaving at least two inches between them.
- Bake: Bake the cool whip cookies for 10 minutes in the preheated oven. Transfer to a wire rack to cool before eating them.
Top Tips
- Stir by hand: To avoid deflating the cool whip, you should mix these by hand rather than using a mixer. Stir for at least three minutes, or until all of the cake mix is dissolved.
- The dough is sticky! Don’t try to roll these cookies in balls with your hands. Scoop the dough with a cookie scoop and drop it directly in the powdered sugar. Once there is some powdered sugar on the dough balls they will be easier to handle, but you should still be very gentle.
- Make perfectly round cookies: When you pull the cookies out of the oven, use a glass and swirl it around each cookie to make the edges smooth.
- Adjust the size of the cookies: You can make these larger or smaller if you like. Just be sure to check on them as the bake time may change by 1 or 2 minutes.
- Add Extra Sprinkles: Add a few rainbow sprinkles to the top of each cookie before baking to make them extra colorful.
Storing Cool Whip Cookies
Once cooled, store Cool Whip cookies in an airtight container at room temperature. They are best enjoyed within 3 days. You can also freeze these cookies for up to 2 months.

Recipe FAQs
Can I make these with gluten free cake mix?
I have not personally tried making cool whip cookies with GF cake mix, but I expect that it would probably work. If you try it, come back and let me know!
Can I make cookies with low-fat or fat-free cool whip?
Yes, you can! There is a popular Weight Watchers recipe that uses sugar free cake mix and fat free cool whip to make similar cookies. Lite Cool Whip should also work. I don’t generally enjoy the flavor of fat-free cool whip, but you can decide for yourself!
Should I chill the dough?
I didn’t see a need to chill the dough, but if it’s particularly warm in your kitchen you might want to. Chilling the dough will make it a bit firmer and potentially easier to handle.
