Key Ingredients
Complete list of ingredients with quantities and instructions is located in the recipe card below
- Double Stuf Oreos: These cookies are the star of the recipe! Double Stuf Oreos have twice the cream filling, making them extra tasty. If you want, you can also use regular Oreos, Golden Oreos, or any other cookie of your preference.
- Ghirardelli vanilla melting wafers: These give a rich vanilla flavor and smooth finish to your Oreos. Can’t find this brand? Any brand of white candy melts would work as well. I also like Wilton Candy melts (but Ghirardelli candy melts taste better) and almond bark would also work.
- Wilton red candy melts: These give our Oreos their vibrant red color. If you can’t find this particular color or brand, feel free to use food coloring to dye white candy melts.
- Wilton royal blue candy melts: These provide a deep blue hue. As with the red, you can use food coloring if blue candy melts are unavailable.
- White nonpareils: These tiny sugar pellets provide a crunchy texture and a cute look to your cookies. If you don’t have nonpareils, you could substitute them with other white sprinkles or leave them out entirely.
- Red, white, and blue nonpareils: To make the Oreos extra pretty!
As for the equipment, it is quite basic and can be found in most kitchens. If you don’t have a double boiler, you can simply use a heatproof bowl over a pot of simmering water. And if you don’t have piping bags, a Ziploc bag with a corner snipped off will do the trick!
How To Make Patriotic Oreos
To get your Patriotic Oreos, start by lining your baking trays with parchment paper. You’ll be creating four different types of Oreos: blue ones with white nonpareils, red ones with white stripes, white ones with red, white, and blue nonpareils, and white ones with red and blue drizzle.
For each type, you’ll melt the corresponding color of candy melts, dip your Oreos, and add your chosen decorations. Remember to place your decorated Oreos in the fridge so the candy coating can set.
In just 45 minutes of preparation and 15 minutes of setting time, you’ll have 36 beautifully decorated Patriotic Oreos ready to serve!
Top Tips
- Whether using the double boiler or microwave method, make sure to melt the wafers over a low heat to avoid them from seizing and becoming thick.
- Never add liquid to candy melts. For Wilton brand candy melts, you can add 1-2 teaspoons of vegetable shortening per 12-ounce bag of melts.
- Feel free to use any flavor of Oreos you desire, even Golden Oreos. You can also use regular, Double Stuf, or Mega Stuf varieties.
Storing Tips
- Your 4th of July Oreos can be made ahead of time and will last 7-10 days stored at room temperature in an airtight container.
- They can also be stored in the fridge in an airtight container or ziplock bag for up to 2 weeks.
Recipe FAQs
While we used Double Stuf Oreos for this recipe, you can substitute any cookie of your choice. However, keep in mind that the result may not be as rich or creamy as with Oreos.
You can use a double boiler or a microwave to melt the wafers. If you choose to use a microwave, make sure to heat in 30-second increments and stir each time to prevent the wafers from burning.
Yes, you can! Just make sure to use vegan or gluten-free cookies and check that your candy melts and sprinkles meet your dietary needs as well.
